“It’s Been an On-Again,Off-Again Spring:”A Prayer
O Lord, it's been an on-again, off-again spring, that's for sure
one day hot,
next day cold,
lug plants out,
lug plants in;
brilliantblue skies,
gloomy gray skies,
rain, rain, go away,
come again another day,
and go away it goes, only
to come again, and
again,
(must be the weekend), and so
carry cushions out, carry cushions in;
leaves turning green,
blossoms turning brown
(as in frost-bitten brown);
one day
spring,
next day
summer,
next day
winter;
can’t get a
stretch of refreshing spring weather to stretch out for long,
so on-again, off-again
the weather is;
but hey, it’s not just the weather, it’s life,
lives on-again off-again lives;
one day on a roll,
next day in a rut;
everything going our way,
everything going every way
but our way;
everything going right,
everything going wrong;
everything going good,
everything going bad;
relationships,
retirement,
work,
on-again, off-again; aches and pains the same, like
someone fidgeting with a switch,
on, then off, then on again;
and how we feel,
one day well,
next day sick;
one day up,
next day down;
one day happy,
next day sad;
can’t get a stretch of happy days to stretch out for long;
but hey, what else can we expect in a
on-again, off-again world like ours;
one day good news,
next day bad news
(more like one minute, next minute);
one day kindness abounds,
next day cruelty rebounds;
one day goodness,
next day evil; and
violence, violence always on, never off, violence sure forecast; and
prejudice, everything changed, nothing changed, because
fear unchanged, so prejudice sure forecast, and
hate, always in the forecast;
can’t get a stretch of hope-filled days to stretch out
in this
on-again,
off-again,
world.
And no different, O Lord, when it comes to being your people;
on-again, off-again faith,
on-again, off-again hope,
on-again, off-again love;
obedience on, then off, but mostly off,
if we are brutally honest,
honest about little gods worship,
honest about culture defining,
honest about political belief
more powerful than
any other belief;
and such
little faith,
fear and worry and anxiety
rarely off,
the violence, the madness, the stupidity outrageous,
making it
hard to hold fast,
easy to be afraid,
easy to question,
easy to despair;
believers more loyal to
tin-pot politicians than to
you;
believers believing more
in themselves than in
you;
believers joining the crowds,
behavior no different,
mean and cruel and hateful,
as if don’t believe, don’t believe in
you;
the story of your people from day one,
your on-again, off-again,
people.
That’s the truth of it,O Lord, but not the whole truth,
not the whole story, because when all
said and done,
the truth is that
it’s a love story,
and like any love story
it is a story of joy and pain,
conflict and trouble and doubt,
ecstasy and anger,
forgiveness,
finding a way back,
healing and gladness and hope,
and so much more;
a story of
your love,
your loving judgements,
your undeserved mercy,
your healing forgiveness,
your faithfulness to us; and so
a story of you
never letting go of us
even when we let go of you;
never turning away
even when you must want to;
never giving up on us
even when you have every reason to;
and let this be
our prayer,
that in the power of the Spirit,
our stories would become stories of
greater faith,
greater hope,
greater love,
more on-again, less off-again,
long stretches of obedience, loyalty, joy, stretching out;
and when once again we are off-again, you would
lure us,
lead us,
love us
back to you.
And as always, Lord, we pray for those who are ill,
who are suffering and hurting, who are dying,
who are grieving, who are battling depression,
and the hungry, the homeless, refugees
near and far.
Heal them, ease their pain, be near them, comfort them,
lift them in hope, and let them be fed and housed
and find safe haven.
O Lord, I’m pretty sure that in the 47 years we have lived here,
there has been at least one spring that
sprang as springs should spring,
not like this spring un-sprung;
but hey, this is Atlanta, an
on-again, off-again place for sure
(think sports teams and their fans;
think race relations, politics,
fine Christian people; or
just think
traffic);
but
even if the weather isn’t
what it should be
let us be
what we should be,
unwavering, unvarying, unswerving, in devotion to you,
staunch faith, stalwart hope, steadfast love,
constant.
Amen.
