Dear Members, Visitors, and Friends of the Congregation,

          I hope you had an enjoyable Fourth of July celebration and if you weren't able to see a fireworks show in person, you watched one of the stunning ones on TV.

          The prayer I will pray during our ZOOM Worship Time tonight, Wednesday, July 5, at 7:00 PM, is a strange one, I know, since it's about shirts I love wearing. I just hope you can get something out of it. And yes, I did go a little crazy with, get a little caught up in, got a little charmed by, alliterations. Sorry about that. But it was fun and I did learn a new word or two.

           May we wear Christ each and every day,

Pastor Halenza

                                        O Lord, it's about those shirts I wear, those shirts some, maybe many,

                                                                     titch too much,
                                                                             titch over the top,
                                                                                                                little too
                                                                                                                              fancy,

                                                                                                                                           flamboyant,
                                                                                                                                                   more than a bit
                                                                                                                                      outlandish,
                                                                                                                               outrageous,
                                                                                                                         ostentatious;

                                                                                                              spattered,
                                                                                                        splattered
                                                                                             with color;
                                                             riotous, rioting, reds;

                                                                                   offbeat, outré, oranges;
                                                                                           glowing, glimmering, greens;
                                                                                                                                                       colors on steroids;
                                                                                                                                                 patterns provoking;
                                                                                                                              glorious gardens growing;
                                                                                                                flowers laughing loudly;
                                                                                                   Chinese dragons dancing;
                                                                                           Darth Vader menacing;

                                                                     Picasso prints, Miró murals, O'Keefe oils, Cubist cubes,
                                                                             abstract artists’ abstracts; and
                                                                                     if not enough, try rhinestones,
                                                                                                   rhinestones
                                                                                                                winking, blinking, twinkling,
                                                                                                                                    like lovely little lights lit;
                                                                                                                                                                     love to wear,
                                                                                                                                                           don't care
                                                                                                                                           if people stare;
                                                                                                                               make me smile,
                                                                                                                   give me joy,
                                                                                                       bring me alive;
                                                                              and that's what it is
                                                                                    about those shirts, they’re
                                                                                           such great fun.

                                        But it's about more than that, O Lord, as you well know; they are my
                                                     daft, dotty, defiance;
                                                            minor, mini, mutiny;
                                                                  puny, preposterous, protest;
                                                                         ridiculous, risible, rebellion;
                                                                                silly, subversive, stand; my
                                                                                            stand against
                                                                        doctor's office gray,
                                                                  glum, gloomy, grey
                                              (What meant by value-neutral decorating - blech bland?);
                                                      attempt to add a little
                                                             color to colorless cancer corridors,
                                                                    life to sterile sterilized examination rooms,
                                                                            cheer to cheerless waiting areas;
                                                                                   louder the shirt the better,
                                                                                          scream for me
                                                                                                    what I want
                                                                                                                    to scream:
                                                                                                                           still alive,
                                                                                                                                  still enjoy,
                                                                                                                                        still more than
                                                                                                               scan on a computer screen; and my
                                                                                                        rebellion against
                                                                                                 politicians supposedly
                                                                                          so scintillating,
                                                                             so stimulating,
                                                                 so stirring,
                                                     but in fact
                                                                        boring, boring beyond belief,
                                                                                 blah, blah, blah,
                                                                                        day in and day out, same old
                                                                                               whines,
                                                                                                      twines,
                                                                                                             lines; and so,
                                                                                                                    yawn, yawn, yawn;
                                                                                                                           spoiled, selfish, snotty,
                                                                                                                                              brats;
                                                                                                                                 and so,
                                                                                          please, please, please
                                                                                    shut up
                                                                                until
                                                                  grow up;
                                                            be laughable
                                                                   if wasn't so seriously scary; but
                                                                                have to laugh,
                                                                                              so ludicrous,
                                                                                                     so farcical,
                                                                                                            so absurd;
                                                                                                                         must laugh,

                                                                                                                 the dismay always lurking about;

                                                                                       the depression always on the prowl;

                                                                                                                                          playful shirts reminding

                                                                                             the hope beyond the idiocy,
                                                                                                    the life beyond life, beyond death.

                                        But the truth is, O Lord, it's about more than those shirts I wear,
                                             because it takes more than putting on those shirts;
                                                    it takes
                                                            putting on Christ each day,
                                                                   wearing Christ day after day,
                                                                          adorning ourselves with Christ every day;
                                                                                      and that is my prayer,
                                               not that we go out and buy a wild shirt or two (not a bad
                                                      idea, though),
                                                              but that we
                                                                     sparkle with the light of Christ,
                                                                             shine with love for God and the neighbor,
                                                                                      splash hope and joy and beauty
                                                                                              all over the place.

                                        O Lord, heal, comfort, console, strengthen, and lift up those who
                                              are ill, are suffering or hurting, are dying, are grieving,
                                                     are alone and feel lost, and the hungry,
                                                           the homeless, refugees everywhere.
                                              Move us to be something of your presence to them in
                                                      whatever way we can, so they know we are
                                                             near to them and will stay by them.

                                         O Lord it's about those shirts I wear, but more than anything
                                                     it's about wearing
                                                             the over the top mercy,
                                                                    the flamboyant love,
                                                                           the outrageous grace,
                                                                                  the sparkling faith,
                                                                                         the glittering hope,
                                                                                                                          that is
                                                                                                                                 the wardrobe
                                                                                                                     of Christ;
                                                                                                         wearing a
                                                                              resurrection shirt
                                                                       that is the most
                                                                  stunning shirt
                                                      imaginable,
                                                                          my absolute favorite.

                                               Amen.

June 28, 2023

Dear Members, Visitors, and Friends of the Congregation,

          I hope you have a wonderful 4th of July weekend celebrating our freedom as a nation with family and friends (and a few fireworks?).

          The attached prayer, which will be prayed during our ZOOM Worship Time tonight, Wednesday, June 28, at 7:00 PM, may seem familiar to you since it is similar to what I pray every year at this time. I hope you will be able to make it part of your observance of the 4th in one way or another.

          May God bless us as a nation and continue to lead us toward becoming a more perfect union,

Pastor Halenza

Prayer for 6/28/23

June 28, 2023

Give Thanks and Celebrate! A Prayer for the Fourth

(Note: the opening lines of the prayer are drawn from a work by F. Buechner)

                                        O Lord, from the sprawling, opulent South
                                                    of the stark red earth
                                                           and lazy skies,
                                                                               to the lonely beauty of New England
                                                                          with its prim certainty
                                                                    of neat white houses and stone fences,
                                                       to the sweep of the Middle West
                                                              with little towns
                                                                           set amidst
                                                               vast and rich prairies,
                                                                                              to the majestic mountains
                                                                          of the West
                                                              and the brash glitter
                                                       of the brawling coast,
                                                 this proud nation stretches,
                                                                                   awesome
                                                                                                   and free.

                                        And we give you thanks, O Lord!
                                                     We thank you
                                                                   for all the blessings
                                                                               you have bestowed upon this land.
                                                            We thank you
                                                                           for those who struggled to establish our freedom,
                                                                                          those who sacrificed to preserve it,
                                                                                                         and those who continue to hold before us
                                                                                                                       the vision
                                                                                                    of all we should be.
                                                                        We thank you
                                                                                      for delivering us
                                                                                                    unto this day.

                                        And remind us, O Lord, remind us of all there is
                                                                       to celebrate still;
                                                                                                         remind us
                                                                                      of the goodness and generosity and kindness
                                                                                still practiced
                                                              by more than a few;
                                                                                               and remind us too
                                                                                          of the values and virtues
                                                                                     still held dear
                                                           by those who still hold
                                                                                                         this county
                                                                                                                            dear –
                                                                                           freedom and equality and justice,
                                                                        truth and self-sacrifice and honor,
                                                    character and compassion and courage,
                                                                                                                             the very values and virtues
                                                                                       that make us what we are as a nation
                                                                            and without which
                                                                           the beacon of light
                                                                     we are called to be
                                                                will grow dimmer,
                                                                              until at last
                                                                                     it will shine no longer;
                                                                                                                            and remind us
                                                          that somehow we always find our way
                                                                to doing what we know
                                                                       to be right,
                                                                                           even though we
                                                                                                   try to ignore it,
                                                                                                          try to fight it,
                                                                                                                 try to extinguish it,
                                                                                                                                                   that somehow
                                                                                                                  right finds its way to us,
                                                                                             and finally prevails,
                                                                                   is prevailing even now,
                                                                             will prevail;
                                                                                                   and above all,
                                                                                                                              remind us
                                                                   that beneath and behind and beyond all that
                                                                         has happened,
                                                                               is happening,
                                                                                            will happen,
                                                                                                                you have been and are and will be
                                                                                                         present,
                                                                             leading and pushing and provoking this nation
                                                                     to do the righteousness you require, and that
                                                                                          in and through it all
                                                                                                                                 you have not abandoned us
                                                                                                 to our faithlessness and foolishness,
                                                                                           even though
                                                                                     there must have been days,
                                                                                                                            and maybe still are days,
                                                                                                          when you felt like, feel like,
                                                                                       giving up on the whole show
                                                                                 and starting over,
                                                                      but you have not,
                                                                                                              are not,
                                                                                                         and, we pray, will not,
                                                                               loving us even when we have become strangers to you,
                                                                                                            forgiving us our great follies,
                                                                                                                          saving us from ourselves again and again.

                                        O Lord, help us to give thanks and celebrate!
                                                      And raise up
                                                             out of our thankfulness and celebration
                                                                     a passion
                                                                            to come together
                                                                                                               as a nation;
                                                                                                                                   the courage
                                                                                                                                                 to overcome
                                                                   all that holds us apart from one another
                                                                                              and work together –
                                                                                                                                 Black and White
                                                                              and Hispanic and Asian and Native
                                                                                                         American,
                                                              young and old and women and men and straight and gay
                                                                     and liberal and conservative and Republican and Democrat
                                                                           and believers and non-believers –
                                                                                                                                               work together
                                                                                                                                   to find solutions,
                                                                                                                       be the solution,
                                                                                            to the problems that so threaten this land;
                                                                                                          and the strength to do the
                                                                                      right thing
                                                                  right now;
                                                                                       to pry prejudice loose
                                                                                               from our fearful hearts,
                                                                           right now;
                                                                                            to pressure the procrastinators we elect to office
                                                                                                             to do justice,
                                                                                          right now;
                                                                                                          to support,
                                                                                                     right now,
                                                                                                                          police and protestors alike,
                                                                                                                                  the best of both wanting the best;
                                                                                                                       to guard,
                                                                                                                 right now,
                                                                                                                              our tongues
                                                                                                                                     that do so much damage;
                                                                                                                        to protect,
                                                                                                                                 right now,
                                                                                                          the beauty of our land
                                                                                                                              from the grip of greed;
                                                                                                                       and today,
                                                                                                                              right now,
                                                                                                                      show
                                                                                         right compassion,
                                                                                                       right care,
                                                                                                                            right concern, for
                                                                                                  all those battling illness and disease,
                                                                                                               all those struggling financially and emotionally,
                                                                                                                           all those who mourn;
                                                                                                                                          and for the people of the Ukraine
                                                                                                                                                 and the refugees who have nowhere to turn.

                                        O Lord, we do give thanks and celebrate!
                                                                                                                      And we pray
                                                                                                                that the day
                                                                                                   will soon come
                                                                                             when at last
                                                                                       we are truly
                                                                                 one nation,
                                                                                                     under you,
                                                                                                                          and there is
                                                                      liberty and justice for all.
                                                                                                                    Grant us
                                                         vision enough, passion enough, love enough,
                                                                  to help bring
                                                                               that day. And
                                                                                              sustain us,
                                                                            sustain us until that day comes,
                                                           sustain us,
                                                                              O Lord
                                                                                       of all hopefulness.

                                              Amen.

June 21, 2023

Dear Members, Visitors, and Friends of the Congregation,

          Between in-person worshippers and those viewing the live stream, a good number of people are worshipping each Sunday and I am so thankful that so many do! It's a new way of being church and we are doing well with it.

          The prayer I will pray during our ZOOM Worship Time tonight, Wednesday, June 21, at 7:00 PM, attempts to speak to how afraid so many are and comes from a number of rambling talks with God these past few years. The prayer is meant to help and I hope it does.

          May we live with the love and fear of God that gives true wisdom,

Pastor Halenza

“Maybe We Should Pray that We Should Be Afraid”: A Prayer

                                        O Lord, maybe we should pray that we should be afraid,
                                                     afraid of you,
                                                             afraid of your anger,
                                                                    afraid of your judgment,
                                                                                                                   because
                                                                                                                           being afraid of
                                                                                                              everything but you
                                                                                                         hasn't helped much,
                                                                                                    hasn't done much
                                                                          except make us more afraid,
                                                                   hasn't done anything
                                                       about all that makes us afraid;
                                                                                                                  and we are afraid,
                                                                                                      afraid of
                                                                           the violence,
                                                                                        the rage,
                                                                                                      the hatred,
                                                                                                                            going to the mall,
                                                                                                                                          going to the store,
                                                                                                                      going for a stroll;
                                                                                                                 afraid of
                                                                          the neighbor next door,
                                                                                        walking up to the neighbor’s door,
                                                                                                       knocking on the neighbor’s door;
                                                                                                                                                                   afraid of
                                                                                                                                                       the stranger,
                                                                                                                                          the other driver,
                                                                                                                             our own shadow;
                                                                                                                we are afraid,
                                                                                                          but then
                                                                                       politicians, those
                                                                                pathetic, pathological, prats
                                                                    want us to
                                                                           be afraid,
                                                                                   vote fear,
                                                                                           and so
                                                                                                  fuel fear;
                                                                                                                 we are afraid,
                                                                                                                                     afraid of the truth
                                                                                                                          (lies so comforting);
                                                                                                                     afraid of reality
                                                                                                       (fantasy so reassuring);
                                                                                                afraid of tomorrow
                                                                                  (nostalgia so soothing);
                                                                              but
                                                                                    not afraid
                                                                                               of you;
                                                                                                       and shouldn't be,
                                                                                                                                        because, many say,
                                                                                                                                                      God of love,
                                                                                                                                                             God of mercy,
                                                                                                                                                                    God of grace;
                                                                                                                                                        and what want,
                                                                                       your love, your mercy, your grace;
                                                                                                     but
                                                                                  not your forgiveness
                                                                                         because, many feel,
                                                                                                 don't need forgiveness, because
                                                                                                        don't sin (negative notion negated years ago); and
                                                                                                                don't need forgiveness of others,
                                                                                                                       because, many believe,
                                                                                       can't be wrong, can only be right,
                                                                                            because
                                                                                                    no one has the right
                                                                                                           to tell us we're wrong, and anyway,
                                                                                        no right, no wrong, only personal feelings, opinions, actions, so
                                                                                               always right,
                                                                                                      never wrong,
                                                                                                             never sin, so
                                                                                                                   never need to be
                                                                                                                          afraid of your judgment.

                                        And yet, O Lord, maybe we should be afraid, should be afraid of you;
                                                           afraid that you will turn away, let us go our own way;
                                                                 afraid that you will leave us to our own devices;
                                                                       afraid that you will say to us the most
                                                                              terrifying thing you can say,
                                                                                     “Not my will,
                                                                                            but your will
                                                                                                                be done;”
                                                                               maybe we should be afraid
                                             because we know what happens when
                                                     our will be done,
                                                            go our own way,
                                                                   left to our own devices;
                                                                                                           what happens is
                                                                                                                  we get
                                                                                                                        what we've got, and
                                                                                                           what we've got are
                                                                                               the consequences of
                                                                           devising our own devices,
                                                               going our own way,
                                                  doing what we will;
                                                                                    the consequences of
                                                                                                               doing nothing except more nothing;
                                                                                                                             the consequences of
                                                            public preferring petulant, pernicious politics,
                                                                                 egos gone wild;
                                                                                                      the consequences of
                                                                                                thinking that
                                                                                         your love
                                                                                                      implies no obedience needed,
                                                                                                             your mercy
                                                                                                                   implies no judgement involved,
                                                                                                                          your grace
                                                                                                                                 implies no accountability
                                                                                                                                               required;
                                                                                                                        the consequences of
                                                                                                         superficial Christianity,
                                                                                                   shallow belief,
                                                                                             surface faith;
                                                           what we’ve gotten is what is always gotten when people have
                                                                  gotten away
                                                                                from you.

                                        And so, O Lord, maybe it’s time to be afraid of you again,
                                                    afraid in the best sense,
                                                           feel the fear that is the
                                                                  beginning of wisdom, feel
                                                                          the awe, the wonder, the reverence, that
                                                                                 tells us that you are truly Lord of all; and
                                                                                        yes, even feel the flat out fear
                                                                                              of you coming near
                                                                                                      because
                                                                                    you are Lord of all;
                                                                              the quaking,
                                                                        the shaking,
                                                                  the shuddering,
                                                      we should feel
                                                               because
                                                                      you are the Lord
                                                                             who loves with a fierce love,
                                                                                    a mother’s fierce love that
                                                                                           censures without hesitation, and yet
                                                                                                   covers a multitude of sins
                                                                                                                without reservation;
                                                                                  who is merciful even when we deserve
                                                                                                                              condemnation;
                                                                                        who is gracious to us even when
                                                                                                     we are anything but gracious;
                                                                                             who is faithful even when
                                                                                                          we are faithless;
                                                                         who never gives us on us even when
                                                                    we give up on you; and so
                                                               maybe it’s time to
                                                                                                wise up.

                                        O Lord, we pray for those who are afraid in another sense, afraid
                                                     because they are ill, suffering or hurting, dying, alone,
                                                            lost without the one they loved, have nowhere
                                                                    to turn, and the homeless, the hungry,
                                                                            refugees everywhere.
                                                        Cast out their fears with your love, give them the peace of
                                                               your presence, grace their days with hope,
                                                                      even joy and laughter.

                                        O Lord, sometimes I think we’re not the brightest bulbs in the box,
                                               dim bulbs, really, like the first disciples,
                                                     not very sharp when it comes to it,
                                                            because
                                                                   we keep getting
                                                                                              more of
                                                                                       what we’ve got,
                                                                                                      what we always get when
                                                                                   get away from you, and will
                                                                             get even more, unless
                                                   get back to you, get back to consequences, get back to accountability,
                                                          and
                                                                wise up
                                                                        and live with the
                                                                                     love and fear that is
                                                                                             not afraid.

                                               Amen.

June 14, 2023

Dear Members, Visitors, and Friends of the Congregation,

          I hope you've been able to enjoy in some way the scrumptious weather we've been having of late.

          The prayer I will pray during our ZOOM Worship Time tonight, Wednesday, June 14, at 7:00 PM, is a prayer for all those who, like me, have a tendency to be world class worriers. I hope it helps.

          May God grace us with the belief, the faith, that trust that all shall be well,

Pastor Halenza
