“Worried About Not Worrying About Not Worrying:”A Prayer
O Lord, sometimes we get so worried about not worrying about
not worrying,
as if
not worrying
means not caring,
as if
not fretting
means not concerned,
as if
not agonizing
means not serious;
and maybe that's it,
worry about not worrying about not worrying
to make sure do worry;
to prove to ourselves do care about others, are
concerned about nation, take seriously
our choices and decisions;
to impress others with just how much
do care, are concerned ,are serious;
or maybe it’s
you
want to impress,
prove something to; so
make sure we do worry, so
you’ll be sure to
answer our prayers,
do whatever we ask,
give us what we want,
because
you’ll see
how much we do care, are concerned, are serious; so,
worry
about not worrying
about not worrying
so that
keep worrying
to show you how worried
we are
and why
you should
care for us, be concerned for us, take us seriously.
But again and again, O Lord ,you tell us not to worry, not to be
anxious, not to let our hearts be troubled,
because
can’t worry ourselves well (or anyone else,
for that matter),
can’t worry ourselves safe (or anyone else,
for that matter),
can’t worry ourselves more years (or
anyone else, for that matter);
this we know;
yet still, we
wring our hands,
furrow our brows,
rub our temples,
fidget in a chair,
pace the floor,
but all our worrying and fretting and agonizing does is to
increase the already ungodly profits of
the makers of
Tums,
Pepcid,
Rolaids,
Mylanta,
Xanax and more;
this we know;
yet still,
worry ourselves sick trying to worry ourselves or others well;
worry ourselves scared trying to worry ourselves or others safe;
worry ourselves to death trying to will just one more year
for ourselves or others;
this we know;
yet still,
add to today’s troubles even though today’s troubles are
enough for today;
add to tomorrow worries even though tomorrow
brings worries enough of it’s own;
add to yesterday’s anxieties even though
yesterday’s anxieties yesterday’s;
but can’t
let today be enough for today,
let tomorrow be,
let go of yesterday,
because
afraid,
afraid to stop worrying,
afraid not to worry,
afraid of no worry,
afraid,
not to worry about not worrying about not worrying.
O Lord, surely you must despair when you consider how we are,
our unbelief,
our little faith,
our lack of trust.
But
we do believe,
that’s not the problem;
it’s our unbelief, our
unbelieving believing, our
believing become unbelieving
when something too much to believe,
when must believe beyond what believable,
when must believe beyond believing in ourselves,
believe in you and what you can do,
believe the unbelievable;
we believe,
help our
unbelief!
And
increase
our faith;
faith fine
until
faith fails,
fallacious faith fails,
fails to heal us or those we love,
fails to safeguard us and those we love,
fails to be give us and those we love what need;
faith fine
until
must
have faith
beyond
faith have;
faith fine
until
feel like
being asked to walk on water
(talk about getting a sinking feeling!);
increase our faith!
And trust,
fully,
actually,
totally,
trust
in you!
So that
not troubled by all the troubles troubling us,
not anxious about tomorrow,
not worry about lives,
but commend ourselves, those we love, this nation, to you,
believing, trusting, having the faith
that all shall be well.
O Lord, you know the drill, what we routinely pray next,
but never let it become routine, simply a ritual,
praying for the ill, the suffering or hurting,
the dying, the grieving, the played out
and prayed out, the homeless,
the hungry, the refugees,
peace on earth,
on our streets.
Let us rather
pray for healing, hope, peace
with all of our heart;
pray for the courage
to do what we can;
pray for the strength
to keep doing what we can.
O Lord, we’re such funny people, worrying about not worrying about
not worrying, worrying making us think we’re
feeling something,
doing something,
being something,
but not;
so help us to
feel a love for you,
do what you would have us do,
be what you would have us be,
and if we must worry, then
worry about something
worth the worry,
obeying your will.
Amen.
