Tiger Is Injured in a Car Accident: A Prayer

            O Lord, Tiger is injured in a car accident
                          and the news
                                              leads the news,
                                                       more important than any other news,
                                                                                                            biggest
                                                                                  news of the day
                                            such a big name he is;
                                                                             a film star dies
                                                          and he gets
                                       a starring role
                          one last time, gets
                                                     rave reviews
                                                                   one last time,
                                         no other death newsworthy enough
                                                      to be news
                                                                    on the news;
                                                                                        some celebrity
                                                                                                      has a problem,
                                                                                                            and his or her anguish
                                      is more anguishing more than anyone else’s anguish,
                                            so anguishing
                                                         to be news enough
                                                                       to earn a special interview
                                                                               with an anguished interviewer,
                                                                                            the anguish of the anguisher
                                                                                                                 big news,
                                                                                                                        leaving me
                                                                                                      anguishing
                                                                                  over why I
                                                                      keep tuning in,
                                                         keep watching,
                                            keep listening.

            O Lord, is it just me or do others also think
                                values are out of whack,
                                              priorities are out of whack,
                                                            our culture
                                                                          just plain
                                                                                       whacko?
                                                                                              Don’t get me wrong,
                                                                                   I feel
                                                                  for Tiger,
                                                     for the film star’s family, 
                           for the celebrity who anguishes,
                     but no more so
                                   than for anyone else,
                                                                           well, ok,
                                                                                        maybe less for them
                                                                                               than others.
                                                                                                                    It’s just that
                                                                          I keep thinking about
                                                     the man I knew
                                        who died alone in the hospital from the coronavirus,
                                               no family with him,
                                                            not allowed,
                                                                                 only strangers,
                                                                                               yes, caring strangers nursing him,
                                                                                                           but strangers
                                                                                                                                      still;
                                                                                                                                            and all the others
                                                                                                  among the 500,00
                                                                     who have died
                                             who have died
                                                                         alone.
                                                                                 That’s real anguish,
                                                                                              big news in my book,
                                                                                                     a lead story
                                                                                                                  if there ever was one.
                                                            And someone’s neighbor
                                  I heard about,
                                         no family, no children, no anyone,
                                                            old enough to have no friends left,
                                                                                                                              and so,
                                                                                                     no one to turn to,
                                                                                         because
                                                              everyone thinks
                                                everyone has
                                  someone.
                                         And I can go on and on,
                                                the guy, the young woman,
                                                              struggling with, suffering from,
                                                                     after effects of the virus,
                                                                            lasting for months,
                                                                                          being told it’s all
                                                                                                        in their heads;
                                                                       the family needing food,
                                       the man, the woman needing a job,
                                  the kids not in school,
                                                                                stressed and depressed, 
                                                                                                 fighting off scary thoughts,
                                                                                                              parents
                                                                                                                           fighting off scary thoughts.
                                                                                                                                  And then,
                                      I think of neighbors who are being a neighbor
                                                                                            to their neighbors;
                                                                               people donating food;
                                                                 people lending a hand;
                                                    people being there, being with, others;
                                             people who are making a difference here and there;
                                       people who try to be loving and kind and supportive
                                                                                                    day after day;
                                                                                                                               real stars
                                                                                                           who should get
                                                                                               rave reviews;
                                                                             no big names,
                                                                 but big news
                                                                                        still,
                                                                                            real news
                                                                                                           that should lead the news
                                                                                                                 in a world like ours.

            O Lord, forgive us if we have forgotten
                          what we should value,
                                        what is truly important,
                                                     what should truly matter.
                                                                                                   Forgive us
                                                                               if somewhere along the way,
                                               we have lost our way,
                                  have gone our own way,
                     have forgotten who is the way.
                                                                  Forgive us
                                                                                      if culture
                                                                                                   forms us
                                                                                                                more than
                                                                                                                                    Christ
                                                                                                          transforms us;
                                                                        if we forget Christ,
                                              don’t give him a thought
                                 most days.
                                                   O Lord,
                                                             love us into
                                                                          loving you
                                                                                      more than all our other loves;
                                                                                                           love us into
                                                                                 returning to you, 
                                                               returning to your way,
                                                   returning to the way
                                                                                    we should be;
                                                                                                 love us into
                                                                                                               living with
                                                                                                                             greater compassion,
                                                                                                                                            greater kindness,
                                                                                                                                                          greater mercy.

            And we continue to pray, Lord, for all those devastated by the coronavirus.
                                                                       Be with them,
                     healing, sustaining, comforting, supporting, lifting them
                                   in hope.

            O Lord, help us to come to our senses,
                                 to realize
                                                that the only news you think is
                                                             big news,
                                                                            a lead story,
                                                                                         a feature worth featuring,
                                                  is the story of people
                                     following your lead,
                              being good news to others,
                        living lives featuring Christ being
                                                  the center
                                                of their lives.
                                                                       Help
                                                                              us
                                                                                 to be
                                                                                          such stories!

Dear Members, Visitors, and Friends of the Congregation,

            Please watch your mail for a letter outlining our Holy Week and Easter schedule. We hope and pray that by that point more and more will feel comfortable with in-person worship.

            We know, however, that it may be June or July before we have the attendance we had before the coronavirus changed how we live and work and worship. And so, in order to reach more people and give a better sense of being part of Sunday worship, we will soon be live-streaming the service. The plan is to have it up and running by Easter (we will also continue with the videos for those who cannot access the live stream). We’ll let you know when we’re ready to go.

            The attached prayer, which I will pray during our Mid-week Lenten Service this evening at 7:00 PM, is a rambling reaction to the morning news one day last week. As always, I can only hope that it speaks to you in some way during this season of Lent as we seek to return to the Lord, return to what we should be.

            May God give us the sense to keep doing what we should to protect others and ourselves until more and more are vaccinated and it is safer to gather with others,

Dear Members, Visitors, and Friends of the Congregation,

          If you read last week’s prayer, then the attached prayer, which I will pray during our Mid-week Lenten Service tonight on ZOOM at 7:00 PM, will be very familiar to you because it’s pretty much the same prayer. Since I wasn’t able to pray it due to the service being cancelled, I thought I would go ahead and pray it this week. The prayer reflects the call of Lent and comes from hearing and seeing how Christians often talk about God and act. Once again, it is a part “talking prayer” and part traditional prayer. I can only hope that it speaks to you in some way and gets you thinking about the sin at the heart of all sin and helps you pray your own prayers.

          Please be aware that we will conduct Parking Lot Communion services the second Saturday of every month at 11:00 AM until most everyone is attending in-person Sunday worship. The next service will be held on March 13.

          May God continue to grace us with the patience and strength we need to get beyond the virus and lift us in hope throughout these days,

Return to the Lord: A Prayer for Lent

            O Lord, throughout this season of Lent,
                          you call us
                                           to repent,
                                                        to confess our sin,
                                                                                       to return
                                                                                                      to you;
                                                                             but which you
                                           are we to return to?
                         So many yous out there,
                                the Democrat you,
                                       the Republican you,
                                              the Independent you,
                           the right-wing you, the left-wing you, the moderate you,
                                                      the American you,
                                                                                            the AK47 you,
                                                                                                                          the peacenik you,
                                      the capitalist you, socialist you, on-the-fence you,
                                                    and of course
                                                                            the male you,
                                                                                            the female you,
                                                                                                           the non binary you,
                                                                                                                                     and can’t forget,
                                              the Old Testament you, the New Testament you
                                                         (and never the twain shall meet?),
                                                                                                                        my you,
                                                                                                          their you,
                                                                                 and more yous too,
                                                              the you for whom
                                     truth (a) matters, or
                                                   (b) is no big deal since its whatever someone says it is;
                                            mercy, kindness, compassion
                                                         (a) count big, or
                                                         (b) are for losers;
                                                    character
                                                                 (a) rates high, or
                                                                 (b) should never get in the way of making money;
                                                           the poor
                                                                         (a) are precious in your eyes, or
                                                                         (b) are poor because they want to be
                                                                                and just need to get a job;
                                                                   loving the neighbor
                                                                                 (a) means to act for the sake of the other,
                                                                                         even an enemy, or 
                                                                                  (b) means to be nice to those who
                                                                                          are nice to us;
                                                                             righteousness and justice
                                                                                             (a) are high on the agenda, or
                                                                                             (b) can wait until we get around to them;
                                                                                      obedience
                                                                                                     (a) is non-negotiable, or
                                                                                                      (b) is no longer required
                                                              since it’s a very dated idea

                                                                            in healthy relationships.

            O Lord, forgive us,
                                             forgive your people,
                                                                                forgive us all
                                                                                               for making you
                                                                           into the you
                                                              we want,
                         (step right up and pick a god)
                                the god of our favorite Bible passages;
                                      the god who always forgives, never judges
                                            (well, not us, only “them”);
                                                   who never holds us accountable;
                                                          the god of all grace, no consequences;
                               the god who never confronts or challenges,
                                      only comforts and consoles.
                                                                                           Forgive us
                                                                              for loving
                                              our opinions and beliefs and prejudices
                                  more than we
                            love you.
                                         Forgive us
                                                             the sin
                                                                            at the heart of
                                                                                                      all sin,
                                                                                                             at the heart of
                                                                                                our culture,
                                                                                          the sin
                                                                   at the heart of
                                       our churches too:
                                                                        idolatry,
                                                                                      the idolatry of worshipping
                                                                                                    our you
                                                                                                                 as if
                                                                                                                        it is you. 

            O Lord, it is way past time that we
                           come to our senses,
                                   repent,
                                            return to you, the you
                                                          beyond the you we believe in,
                          the you who is Lord of all creation,
                                 the you we meet in Jesus,
                                        the you Scripture points us to,
                                                the you the Spirit leads us too see,
                                                       the you
                                    who is our lover who loves us with a love beyond all telling;
                                         who gives all and demands all;
                                              who heals us with your wonders
                                                                  and wounds us healingly with your judgements;*
                                                            who calls us to a hard obedience;
                                                                         who is
                                                                                our hope
                                                                                            and salvation.
                                                                                                               And so,
                                  grace us with the faith and courage and strength
                                         to return
                                                        to you;
                                                               to return
                                                                              to your truth;
                                                                                      to mercy, kindness, compassion;
                                                                                             to character;
                                                                                                   to lifting up the poor;
                                                                                                          to loving our neighbor;
                                                                        to doing righteousness
                                                                                     and justice;
                                                                                          to
                                                                                               obedience;
                                                                                                                to return to
                                               what we have known for a long time
                                   we must return to
                                                                    if ever
                                                                           we, our nation, this earth,
                                                                                  are to know
                                                                                                       hope.

            O Lord, so many are so ready,
                          so ready to
                                              see people,
                                                             hug people,
                                                                                 talk with people,
                                                                                                           face to face, 
                                                                                                     need
                                           to see, hug, talk with people,
                             the emotional, mental, physical toll mounting,
                        but not there yet,
                                                          and so
                                                                give us the patience and strength
                                                                        to see us through
                                                                                                   to safer times.
                                                                                                                        And we pray
                                          that you would heal, sustain, be with, support, lift up
                                                  all those devastated by the corona virus
                                                         and move us
                                                                to keep doing whatever we can
                                                                       to be there for them.

Dear Members, Visitors, and Friends of the Congregation,

          Today, Ash Wednesday, we begin the season of Lent. Mid-week Lenten services will be held on ZOOM on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM beginning this evening (check Pastor Flanigan’s separate email for the order of service and the info you need to join the call). The attached prayer, which I will pray during our service tonight, reflects the call of Lent and comes from hearing and seeing how Christians often talk about God and act. Once again, it is part “talking prayer” and part traditional prayer. I can only hope that it speaks to you in some way and gets you thinking about the sin at the heart of all sin and helps you pray your own prayers.

          The number of new cases of the coronavirus are falling dramatically and more and more people are being vaccinated. We hope that these developments will lead to resuming a more normal schedule before too long. In particular, we hope that by Easter (April 4) there will be a lot of us gathering for worship and we will finally be able to stay following the service for coffee and sweets and fellowship – actually talk to one another in person!

          Of course we're not there yet and so we will continue our Parking Lot Communion services on every second Saturday at 11:00 AM. March 13 will be the next one and we hope you will join us.

          May God continue to grace us with the patience and strength we need to get beyond the virus and continue to give thanks to God in all things and be there for others in whatever way we can,

Dear Members, Visitors, and Friends of the Congregation,

          As announced, this year we will observe Ash Wednesday, February 17, with one worship service, a Parking Lot Communion Service with the Imposition of Ashes at noon. We are doing it this way in hope that those who are not yet comfortable with gathering indoors will feel safe attending this service. We also hope that by scheduling the service at noon those who work would be able to have time during the lunch hour to be part of the service.

          Our Mid-week Lent services will be virtual services held each Wednesday at 7:00 PM on ZOOM (we are using the Wednesday evening conference call time for this purpose). Please watch for an email from Pastor Flanigan on Wednesdays which will give you the info you need to be part of the services.

          I guess the attached prayer, which I will pray during our Conference Call tonight, February 10, at 7:00 PM, is best called a “kind of a prayer” since it’s certainly not a traditional prayer for this or that, but a prayer that describes how I pray most every day. Whatever it is, I hope it will help you with your prayers.

          May God continue to lift us in hope and grace us with the patience we need as we wait impatiently for the day we can pick up our lives again and enjoy more normal days,
