Dear Member,

         Sunday, June 14th, will be the day, the day we gather again for worship! Please watch for emails detailing our preparations and plans to make it as safe as possible for us to come together. We will not, however, have Sunday School that day as we first want to see how it goes with worship. Also, note that Wednesday Evening Communion services will resume June 17 at 6:30 PM and Bible Study will resume on Thursday, June 18, at 10:00 AM. Needless to say, it will be great to see you again!

         One other thing is that we will continue to do videos since they have proven to be not only a good way for members to stay connected to the congregation but also to reach out to those searching for a church home. We will explore other ways of being and bringing the church to you and others.

Concerning announcements…

         We will provide food for Calvary Refuge on Thursday, June 25. Before purchasing any items, please contact Carol Meyer (770-461-3448) to see what is needed so that we avoid duplications.

           Fayette Samaritans continues to need food items. Most needed items are as follows: canned chicken, dried beans, corn, green beans, mixed vegetables, canned fruit, canned pasta, cereal, Jiffy cornbread mix, and feminine products. They are not accepting clothing at this time.

With regard to our people

         Again I’m glad to report that no member of the congregation has contracted the coronavirus.

          We extend the sympathy of the congregation and the strength and hope we share in the resurrection of Christ to Everett & Annette Flanigan upon the death of their nephew.

          Barbara Gordin wishes to thank the congregation for their calls, cards and expressions of sympathy upon the death of her brother.

         May God continue to grant us the good sense and strength to follow the basic practices that have kept us safe and will enable us to soon gather again for worship,

Dear Member,

         As we have announced, we will gather this coming Sunday, May 24, at 10:00 AM for a communion service in the church parking lot, and then on Sunday, June 14, we will resume having worship services. Be assured that we will do everything we can to make it safe both to commune and gather for worship.

A Prayer for What Is Required of Us These Days

                                                            O Lord, as more and more businesses are opening up
                                                                               and more and more people
                                                                                      are wanting
                                                                                                         to get back to normal
                                                                                             and have a life again,
                                                                   grace us
                                                                                 with the good sense
                                                                                                                   not to abandon
                                                                                                                                       the basic practices
                                                                             that have helped us make it this far,
                                                                                                                                                    the wisdom
                                                                                                                                                                 to continue to do
                                                                                                                   the right and responsible thing
                                                                                                                          to keep ourselves and others safe
                                                                                  even though others think it foolish,
                                                                                                                                             the wisdom
                                                                                                                                                                to do
                                                                                                                                                   what we need to do
                                                                                                                                      to remain alive
                                                                                                                          and be able to have a life again.

                                                             And we pray, O Lord, that in the midst of
                                                                                 confusing numbers,
                                                                                               conflicting accounts,
                                                                                                                          and the chaos of
                                                                                                            guidelines not always guiding
                                                                                          and leaders not always leading,
                                                                      you would grant us
                                                                                                        the insight and strength
                                                                              to establish and follow our own guidelines
                                                                                                              and be leaders
                                                                                                                    who lead one another through
                                                                                                                                        the wilderness
                                                                                                                                   we are in.

                                                             And fear, O Lord, let not fear dictate
                                                                          our decisions
                                                                                                     and actions.
                                                                                                                         Embrace us
                                                                                                            with your love,
                                                                                  the love
                                                                       that fear itself fears,
                                                                                                               so that
                                                                              our thinking
                                                                                                  and deciding
                                                                                                                           and doing
                                                                                  are directed by faithfulness to your way.

                                                             And we continue to pray, O Lord, for all those everywhere
                                                                           who have contracted the coronavirus,
                                                                                                and those who care for them,
                                                                                                             and those who have lost someone
                                                                                                                                 to the virus.
                                                                                 Heal them!
                                                                                              Sustain them!
                                                                                                                 Comfort them!
                                                                        And for those who have lost their jobs,
                                                                                      those struggling financially,
                                                                                those having trouble putting food on the table,
                                                                                                    those who despair,
                                                                                                                         those who have given up.
                                                                     Let us never weary of doing whatever we can
                                                                                                                                               to help,
                                                                            and move those elected to serve
                                                                                  to actually serve
                                                                                                     and work together
                                                                                               to develop a clear plan that will
                                                                                          guide us out of the morass.

                                                              O Lord, we are often told that we are in a battle
                                                                            and if that is so, then
                                                                                                                give us,
                                                                                                                       we pray,
                                                                               the weapons we need to prevail.
                                                                   Faith.
                                                                           Truth.
                                                                                Courage.
                                                                                              Wisdom.
                                                                                                            Love.
                                                                                                                   Arm us
                                                                                         with such things, O Lord,
                                                                                                                         so that
                                                                     hope would accompany us,
                                                                              and joy would adorn our lives,
                                                                                           and peace would attend our way.

Dear Member,

         As Ken foster communicated a day or two ago, we will resume worship services on Sunday, June 14, and not on May 24 as previously announced. However, we will do a brief, spoken service of communion in the church parking lot on Sunday, May 24, at 10:00 AM, and that should greatly help see us through. We will send out an email this week with details concerning the service.

         I realize that more than a few of you may be disappointed that we have delayed the resumption or worship services, but safety concerns dictate that we do so. On the other hand, it will only be a week until we see one another on May 24 when we gather in the parking lot and June 14 will be here before you know it. And so, soon, very soon, we will be together again at last!

Monetary donations are also very much needed, since shopping for food may be difficult for many people. If you have questions, please contact Sylvia McCullough (770-460-1001).

With regard to our people…

        Once again I’m glad to report that no member of the congregation has contracted the coronavirus.

         We extend the sympathy of the congregation and the strength and hope we share in the resurrection of Christ to Kay Douma and her family upon the death of her sister.

Dear Member,

     For reasons of safety, the Church Council is considering delaying the resumption of worship services until June 14. In the next day or two, Ken Foster, the President of the Congregation, will send out an email detailing what is decided.

A Prayer for Help in Knowing Just What to Do

                                                                          O Lord, it’s hard to know what to do these days –
                                                                                              do we stay in
                                                                                                          or do we go out,
                                                                                                                        do we dine in
                                                                                                                                       or do we dine out,
                                                                                                                   do we wear a mask
                                                                                                                                 or do we not wear a mask,
                                                                                          are we to still distance ourselves
                                                                                                      or can we get up close again,
                                                                                    should we continue to fear
                                                                                                                                 or should we
                                                                                                                           be afraid no longer,
                                                                                                                                                            and oh yes,
                                                                                                               are we to gladly die
                                                                                                          so that the economy may live?
                                                                                                                       (Any volunteers?)
                                                                                                                                                         That’s
                                                                                              how crazy it has become,
                                                                                                    so much confusion,
                                                                                                                 so much uncertainty,
                                                                                                                                     so much that is contradictory,
                                                                                                                               so many voices,
                                                                                                                                                        one advising this,
                                                                                                                                                   one advising that,
                                                                                                                                             one advising both this and that.

                                                                           O Lord, how do we know
                                                                                                                        what
                                                                                                                              we are to do?

                                                                            But the truth is, O Lord, we know what to do.
                                                                                                                           Help us
                                                                                                                                  to do it!
                                                                                                               Help us to listen for your voice
                                                                                                                      above all the others,
                                                                                             your voice calling us to use the brains you have given us
                                                                                                                  to make decisions
                                                                                                                               based on the best information
                                                                                                                                                  and not
                                                                                                                                            on utter nonsense;
                                                                                                           to use the good sense you have blessed us with
                                                                                                                               to do the right thing,
                                                                                                                                                          the responsible thing,
                                                                                                                                                                        not
                                                                                                                                             the reckless or self-serving thing;
                                                                                                      to use the heads you’ve put on our shoulders 
                                                                                                                   for the purpose you intended –
                                                                                                                          to be put together with the heads of others
                                                                                                                                                          and come up
                                                                                                                                                   with clear plans and
                                                                                                                                                                       real solutions.
                                                                                                                                      We know what to do.
                                                                                                                                                                               And so
                                                                                                 grace us with the faith and courage and strength
                                                                                                                                               to just
                                                                                                                                                       do it!

                                                                            We continue to pray, O Lord, for all those everywhere
                                                                                    who battle the coronavirus,
                                                                                                                      those who care for them,
                                                                                                                                                                     and all
                                                                                                               who are grieving for those who succumbed to the virus.
                                                                                                   And for those who have lost their jobs,
                                                                                             who struggle financially,

                                                                                                                                 of trying to help them
                                                                                                                            and supporting efforts to give them hope.
                                                                                                                                                            Let not
                                                                                                             compassion become a victim of fear

                                                                                                                                                                  of stupidity.

                                                                           O Lord, during these days of confusion and uncertainty
                                                                                         let your voice
                                                                                                       be the voice that calms us;
                                                                                                 let your presence
                                                                                                                      be the presence that quiets our fears;
                                                                                                               let your truth
                                                                                                                            be the truth that guides us;
                                                                                                                      so that in the days to come
                                                                                      hope, peace, even joy
                                                                                                                             will attend
                                                                                                                                                our way.

Dear Member,

The Church Council will make a decision this week about resuming worship services on May 24th and we’ll let you know immediately what the decision is. While many of us certainly hope that we’ll be able to gather again on the 24th, the decision must rest not on what we’d like to do but on what it would be responsible to do and that means considering the latest numbers and best advice of healthcare officials so that we can come together safely.
