Tied In Knots: A Prayer
O Lord, tied in knots,
that's how
some
describe themselves these days:
tied in knots.
If it's not
the coronavirus, then it's
politics;
if it's not the virus or politics, then it's
the violence;
and if not
virus or
politics or
violence, then it's
schools, or
friends dying, or
illness or disease at the door, our door;
and the thing is,
there's no getting away from it,
online,
on the news,
on your mind,
on Facebook,
in your face,
in your head,
in your sleep,
last thought before sleep,
first thought waking up,
the fear,
the worry,
the grief,
always there,
somehow more so,
everything more so,
everything made more so by everything being made
more threatening,
more frightening,
more unsettling;
and so,
heads aching,
stomachs aching,
muscles aching,
because
tied,
tied in knots;
and no untying them,
maybe loosening them a little,
but then,
some new news unnerving us,
some new post panicking us,
some new tweet setting us twitching,
knots
tied
tighter;
no place to turn,
everything political,
so everything strained,
relationships strained,
afraid to open your mouth,
not even the weather safe,
too political.
No wonder
tied in knots.
O Lord, untie the knots that knot us!
Love
our fears
away;
create within us
the faith
that can face
anything,
the faith that trust our lives to you;
grace us
with such a strength of
belief
that our hearts
will not be troubled,
and our minds can be at rest;
grant us
a hope
built on you,
a hope we can lean on to see us through;
give us
the eyes to see
that you are with us,
the peace of that.
Untie the knots that knot us and
tie us to you instead
so that
even though we can't get away from it all,
we have
the courage and the confidence to
live,
live as we should and can live,
and
do the right and responsible when it comes to the virus;
not allow
politics to preoccupy us
to the point of poisoning
the very things that should
matter most;
not let
violence lead us to vilifying the non-violent or
to validating violence as a way
of stopping violence;
support
schools trying to do the smart and
safe thing;
live with gladness even in the midst of
disease and death,
make the most of
the time we have
and do what it seems many no longer find it
important to do,
which is
to love
and cherish
others
no matter what.
And Lord, untie this land from what has bound us
from the beginning,
and tie us,
bind us,
to you,
because November
won't be the end of it,
prejudice and hatred and cruelty
too much a part of our land
for too long,
simply seeing today what has
always been there
surfacing,
worse than it once was,
some say.
And so
untie this land
from all that once brought us to bind others in chains
and has bound us ever since
to a never-ending story
of shame;
let us
be the generation
that changes the story,
that obeys your command to let
justice roll down like waters and
righteousness like a mighty stream,
that all yet to come
would enjoy
unbounded hope.
And we pray, O Lord, for those battling the virus,
those wearing themselves out caring for them,
those mourning the loss of someone to the virus,
those devastated financially,
those at the end of their rope.
Heal, sustain, comfort, support, strengthen them!
And for police and protesters we pray,
for peace on the streets,
for people to come together in peace
to find solutions and
heal this land.
O Lord, bind our hearts to
you
and to
one another
in love,
and bless those ties that bind,
that we would not be
tied in knots
but
bound together
with joy!
Amen.
