What It is Doesn’t Have to Be What It Is: A Prayer
O Lord, it is what it is,
at least that’s
what people say,
and so
maybe we should just mourn the loss
of what has been lost
and move on,
and anyway
only words lost,
only phrases lost,
but
more than words,
more than phrases,
descriptions
describing
the very things
without which
we are lost,
as people,
as a nation;
virtue,
valor,
veracity;
conscience, honesty, moral values,
character, honor, moral compass,
courage; humility; moral courage;
respect, dignity,
responsibility; decency;
truthfulness, graciousness,
trustworthiness; generosity;
person of integrity,
public servant;
personal sacrifice; personal discipline;
kindness,
goodness,
all lost,
no longer used,
no longer in circulation,
such people
no longer in circulation (or so it seems).
Words and phrases quietly dying,
hardly anyone noticing,
people worthy of such
description
quietly dying,
or as good as dead,
mocked out of mind,
either way,
lost,
gone,
forgotten.
But, hey, it is what it is,
so let’s
mourn the loss, and
move on,
shallowness and shabbiness and stupidity
just the way it is
(and a lot more fun!).
No!
No!
No!
Never!
Not ever!
Because
it is what it is
because
we allowed it to be
what it is,
what it shouldn’t be,
what it doesn’t have to be;
the coronavirus
is what it is
because
we allowed it to be
what it is,
what it didn’t have to become,
what it never should have become;
and injustice
is what it is
because
we allowed it to be
what it is,
what it shouldn’t be,
what it shamefully still is.
O Lord, forgive us!
Forgive us
for allowing
politics to become what it has become,
the coronavirus to become what it has become,
injustice to become what it has become,
and for our culture
and this land of ours
to become what they have become;
forgive us
for thinking
that your words about
letting justice roll down like waters,
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream,
are just words,
pretty poetry,
rather than what they are –
your mandate,
our marching orders;
forgive us
for forgetting
what’s at stake – the children,
this nation’s children who have
few role models,
few examples to follow,
few adults to emulate,
and thus will
adopt
prejudices adopted by the children before them and before them and before them;
adopt
the language they hear everywhere,
cruel and crass,
viscous and vile,
language no one should have to hear,
void of the words they need to hear;
adopt
the behavior of violence and vengeance
that thrills
so many;
and thus will
inherit
no inheritance at all,
only a future bankrupt of hope.
O Lord, for the sake of the children and this land we love,
give us the strength
to allow these
lost
words and phrases be
found
describing us,
so that
when those should take responsibility
don’t,
we do;
when those who should have a plan
don’t,
we do;
when those who should act to bring justice
don’t,
we do;
the strength
to allow these words
to define us
so that we have what it takes to
get in the way
of prejudice and politics having their way;
get into some good trouble,
trouble enough
to trouble those who should be troubled;
get moving toward
what we know we must;
the strength
to allow these words
to direct us
so that we are role models who model
kindness and goodness,
moral courage,
and much, much more.
O Lord, the coronavirus has been going on forever, it seems, and
patience is running out for many,
money is running out for many,
and many just want to run out,
get out,
go somewhere, anywhere
and not worry.
And the protests continue as well,
tempers running hot,
opinions running wild,
politicians running scary ads
to scare up votes.
Increase patience, heal the afflicted, comfort the grieving.
Let cool heads prevail;
calm our streets;
protect police and protesters alike;
bring people together;
and give us all sense enough not to be fooled or fueled by
manufactured fear.
O Lord, No!
No!
No!
Never!
Not ever!
No, never, not ever does what it is have to be what it is!
Because of
what can be and shall be
if only
one last, lost word
would describe
our relationship to you:
obedience.
Amen.
