“Day After Day We Pray:” A Prayer
O Lord, day after day we pray, pray that you would hear us, pray
that you would listen to us,
listen to the words we speak;
but maybe
what we should pray
day after day is that
we listen,
listen to the word you speak, the word you speak
in our lives,
in all that happens,
in all that we go through;
and so, help us
to hear you,
to hear what our lives are telling us, which is
to hear what you are telling us about our lives;
if we are
weary and worn out,
run ragged by demands and schedules,
help us to hear your word about
what matters most, the need to
take time before
we have no time,
no time left; and
if we are
worried and afraid, anxious and uncertain,
help us to hear your word calling us to
trust in you,
trust that you are with us,
trust that you will see us safely through; and
if we are
sick of being sick,
sick of talking about being sick,
sick of appointments and pills,
help us to hear your word that heals us
in the way most needed; and
if we are
frustrated with
all that advancing years bring,
help us to hear your word that gives us
the courage to face what we must and
continue to find joy in the day; and
if we feel
lost and empty inside
because of what has been lost,
feel that our lives have little point,
help us to hear your word
leading us out of ourselves,
leading us back into life,
leading us to new purpose.
Day after day,
in our work or
in our retirement,
in our marriages or relationships or parenting,
in our wrestling with choices and decisions,
in all that comes our way, help us
to listen,
to listen to our lives,
to listen for your word,
your word of
grace and mercy and love,
your word of
hope.
And help us, O Lord, to listen for the word you speak
in the news of the day, to hear
what the news of the day is telling us
about our world, our nation, ourselves; what
hate and racial prejudice and anti-Semitism
are telling us about this land of ours,
about all of us;
how such things
judge this land,
judge us all;
how such things
call us to
overcome fear and suspicion,
build bridges of understanding,
become one nation under you; and what
the anger and violence,
the resentment and bitterness and rage,
are telling us;
how such things
are your word warning us of
what it will all come to;
how such things
cry out to us to
stop our secret love of violence,
pay attention to the children,
be aware of the other; and what
the pernicious politics so popular
is telling us about
the life of lies,
the death of truth,
the consumption of conspiracies
crackpot conspiracists concoct;
how such things
say a lot about
what we are becoming,
have become;
how such things
call us to return
to you, to your truth, to reality; and what
the obsession with celebrity,
the fixation on the rich and powerful,
the attraction of the tragic, even ranking
the tragic,
the death of five tourists
on a voyage to the bottom of the sea
more important than
the death of hundreds of refugees
on a voyage to new life;
what such things
tell us about
principles (or lack thereof),
priorities (or lack thereof),
perspective (or lack thereof);
how such things
are your word telling us to
come to our senses,
fix our hearts on you,
order our lives
according to what is important to you; and what
the site of
the hungry and homeless,
the outcast and neglected,
the suffering and hurting,
say to us about
the need for kindness and compassion and mercy; and how
the sight of
the war-torn and devastated
is your anguished word pleading
for peace; and how
the sight of
beaches littered with trash, oceans surging with plastic, forests
felled wantonly, rivers of rubbish, air yellowed with pollution,
condemn us and call us to care for this earth with
tenderness.
O Lord, you speak to us day after day, in each day; let us listen,
never grow deaf, to the word you speak in
the beauty of a day,
the silence of a night,
the dawning of a morning new; in
some hymn, some song, some notes; in
a friend's words,
a stranger's words,
a writer's words; in
Scripture, a
newspaper, an
online post; in
the wonders of this world,
the horrors of this world,
the goodness of this world,
the evil of this world,
the joy and pain of this world;
listen to it all;
listen,
and lift up our hearts
in praise and thanks and joy!
Amen.
