Are We There Yet? A Prayer
O Lord, are we there yet?
Like little children on a trip,
people are asking:
Are we there yet?
How much longer will it be?
When will we get there?
Get to the end of the virus,
back to normal,
no masks,
no distancing,
no no-no gatherings,
living again;
and
like little children,
maybe little patience left,
not wanting to hear again
the answer heard again and again:
“It won’t be long now,”
because
been way too long,
getting grumpy,
getting fussy,
getting tired,
really tired,
tired of it all,
temper tantrum time,
no longer cautious,
doing whatever pleases,
like little children,
maybe not thinking about others,
just wanting to finally
get there.
And justice, O Lord, justice.
Are we there yet?
How much longer will it be?
When will we get there?
For many,
all patience lost,
heard too often
what always heard,
“It won’t be long now,”
not there,
not by a long shot,
not even close,
lots of nice words,
but still, only the
beginning of the
beginning that’s been
beginning
forever,
and yet
a sense of a different kind of
beginning, maybe the
beginning of
people changing (Yeah, right),
institutions changing (Oh, sure),
structures changing (Tell me another one),
and yet, and yet,
something happening,
but still far to go.
And as long as we’re at it,
what about
violence?
When will we get there?
Get to where
violence undone,
killing undone,
evil undone,
(Oh, get serious), and
get serious we’d better,
serious about our culture of violence,
serious about why so many love violence,
serious about why so many so angry
and do violence,
words as weapons,
weapons as weapons,
weeping as weapons
work what work;
get serious
because
not there,
not even close,
not even seeing the tunnel,
let alone
the light
at the end of it.
O Lord, grant us what we need to finally get there!
We’re so close, so very close when it comes to the virus,
but still we need
patience enough to get us through
just a month or two more;
strength enough to do what we teach
little children:
sometimes we have to
sacrifice what we want
for the sake of what others need;
sense enough to keep doing
smart and safe until
we are there.
And what we need to get to
justice for all;
the will to make the changes we must,
within ourselves,
within our institutions,
within the structures of society,
if ever
we are to
get there.
And what we need
if ever
we are to
stop the violence,
stop the killing,
stop the evil,
courage enough to
stop glorifying violence,
stop allowing anger to drive us,
stop accepting violence as just the way it is in our culture,
and
start following
you and your way
because that is
the only way
we will
get there.
And Lord, until we do get there,
we continue to pray
for those struggling and hurting because of the virus;
for those suffering because of injustice;
for those whose lives have been torn apart by violence.
Heal, sustain, comfort, strengthen, and lift them in hope.
O Lord, when will we get there?
It’s what we keep
asking.
And what you keep
answering
is:
when we get to
loving you,
obeying you,
serving you,
as we should.
Help us to
live the answer
so that
without question
it won’t be long
until we do
get there.
Amen.
