With Us Abide: A Prayer
(Based on the hymn “Abide with Me”)
O Lord, in all things,
through all things,
beyond all things,
in life,
in death,
with us
abide.
When
others helpers fail
and comforts flee,
when worry or anxiety overwhelms like a flood,
when despair or depression
like darkness
descends,
with us
abide.
Be
our help and consolation,
our security and sure defense,
and like the morning sun,
break through all that clouds you from our eyes
and send the shadows fleeing away
and lift us in
hope.
And when
uncertainty and confusion
all around us we see,
with us
abide.
Be
our guide and our stay,
your love unchanging,
our strength,
our joy.
O Lord, in every passing hour
your presence
we need,
so that
we will not fear
all that threatens,
no foe
a match
for you;
and when
sickness comes,
death approaches,
grief consumes,
ills will have no weight,
tears no bitterness,
because
with you
there is healing and comfort and strength, and
in you
we triumph
over all things
unto life.
O Lord, truly you are the Help of the helpless
and so
abide
with all
who feel helpless,
who are helpless,
who have no help but you.
Be with those
who have been devastated by the coronavirus,
whose lives have been shattered by violence,
who have suffered from injustice,
who endure pain known only to them,
who have nowhere to turn;
and
the hungry,
the homeless,
the outcast.
Move us
to be helpers
of the helpless
ourselves.
O Lord, as you abide with us,
may we
abide
with you
in obedience and faith and love,
and live each day
with thankfulness
and gladness.
O Lord, in life, in death, with us abide.
Hold the cross
before our closing eyes
and lift us
to the skies.
Amen.
