For Who Is Like Unto You?: A Prayer
O Lord, from the rising of the sun to its setting,
help us
to praise
your name.
For who is like unto you?
You raise up the poor from the dust;
you lift up the needy out of despair;
you lead the hopeless out of darkness into light;
you heal the sick
and mend the brokenhearted;
you give strength
to rebuild lives
that lie in ruins
and the courage
to keep living and loving
when the death of someone we love
wants to take
all the life and love
from us.
Let praise
and thanksgiving,
hope and gladness,
grace our days
because
there is none like unto you!
But the truth is, O Lord, some days it seems to be just
wishful thinking,
too much
to swallow,
so hard
to believe,
so easy
to despair;
another child shot,
another driver shot,
another policeman shot;
and on and on,
politics,
the virus,
you name it;
pretty soon seeing only the worst in others,
pretty soon bringing out the worst in us,
pretty soon expecting only the worst;
and by the way,
why does bad news
make so many people
feel so good?
And our personal lives, sometimes
too much,
so hard to deal with it all,
so easy to throw ourselves a pity party.
O Lord, give us the eyes of faith that we would see
that you are
there in all things,
with us in all things,
at work in all things; and
ears that hear
the word you speak
in the news of the day,
in all that happens,
in the words of others,
calling us,
confronting us,
comforting us,
raising and strengthening and gladdening us
with hope; and
hearts that believe, trust,
trust that beyond
whatever darkness we face,
there is a great light.
And help us
to bear our troubles with grace;
to remember that we all of us have known
great sorrow and sadness,
have gone through
hard and painful things,
know what it’s like to suffer;
and so
lift up one another,
encourage one another,
be patient with one another,
be at peace with one another,
see the best in one another.
And let us
hold fast to what is good,
rejoice in what is right,
be great in love,
honor truth,
and be people who are truly your people who
glorify you
in all they do.
And we pray, O Lord, for those who are sick or hospitalized;
those undergoing treatment for cancer;
those struggling with chronic illness or disease;
those who are dying;
those who are grieving;
those who have grown weary of seeing
doctor after doctor;
those who feel empty as a drum.
Heal and lift and strengthen and comfort and refresh them!
And grace them
with the faith that trusts
that all shall be well.
O Lord, in tumult and turmoil,
chaos and confusion,
trouble and tribulation,
even then,
especially then,
help us,
from the rising of the sun to its setting,
to praise
your name.
For who is like unto you?
Amen.
