Bookings Are Way Up: A Prayer
O Lord, bookings are way up, at least
that’s what I heard on the morning news,
bookings are way up,
bookings on airlines,
bookings on cruise lines,
bookings at beach condos;
everyone and his cousin
booking
flights,
cabins,
rooms;
wanting to
get out of Dodge,
get out of their lives,
get away;
wanting to
stop the world and get off;
wanting to
vacuate, vacate, vacation;
because
have had it up to here with the
virus,
mandates and masks,
staying home, staying in, staying put;
because
want their lives back;
because
enough is enough,
politicians fighting,
parents fighting,
people fighting;
because
had enough of the
contentiousness,
craziness,
chaos;
because
tired of being afraid,
tired of being careful,
tired of it all;
and so,
needing a break,
needing to relax,
needing to have some fun;
bookings
way up.
And I give you thanks, O Lord, (we give you thanks?)
that they are way up,
that you have brought us this far,
that we feel free again to get away;
and yes,
I know,
I know,
I know,
still out there,
still need to take care,
still scary,
because
new variant lurking,
old variant hanging on;
and yet,
almost there,
almost beyond it,
almost back to normal (ok, new normal,
abnormal normal);
and so,
we do give thanks,
for the
scientists who developed the vaccines,
leaders who had courage enough to do the unpopular thing,
people who did the right thing and protected themselves
and others;
and even if
we can’t afford
a trip,
a cruise,
a condo,
help us to just
go out the door,
go outside,
go to dinner,
anything
to feel alive and good and hopeful
again.
O Lord, help us, because the thing is, it’s about more than
getting away,
it’s about
getting with others in the flesh
(not just ZOOMing with others),
seeing others face to face
(not just Facebook to Facebook),
talking with others who are
sitting right there with you
(not just sending texts),
because
we are fast losing
our ability to communicate;
we are fast forgetting
our need for human contact, hugs, warmth;
we are fast “hardening
into shells of ourselves”; *
and if ever
we are to do something about
the chaos, the craziness, the contentiousness,
the anger and fighting,
the viruses yet to come,
then we must not only
get off the world now and then and be
refreshed and renewed,
but then
get back on the world
and learn again how to
talk with others,
listen to others,
trust others,
be human again,
be real selves again.
And so,
yes, Lord, help us to
take a trip
out the door.
And we pray, O Lord, for those who want to
get away from illness and disease;
get away from suffering and pain;
get away from dying;
get away from grieving;
get away from depression;
from hunger and homelessness and hopelessness.
Heal, comfort, strengthen, lift and gladden them!
O Lord, it’s no wonder bookings are way up,
so many wanting so much
to have
a life again,
a good time again,
a little fun again.
And that is my prayer: that
we would choose to
live again,
play again,
enjoy others again,
and help
a new normal of normality be normal.
Amen.
