“No Vacancy”: A Prayer
O Lord, every year around this time as Christmas approaches,
what comes to mind,
of all things, are
old roadside motels
with neon signs,
big arrows on top
pointing down
at the lights spelling out,
“No Vacancy”,
coming to mind
because
sometimes
I feel like
I should put out a sign
announcing the same thing,
“No Vacancy”,
life
like
a crowded inn;
and maybe
I’m not the only one,
lives crowded,
crowded with
a million plans,
a million things to do,
a million things to remember
(little lists littering);
or maybe
hearts crowded,
crowded with
anxiety, or
anger or bitterness or
grief and sadness;
or maybe
minds crowded,
crowded with
thoughts and worries and fears,
scurrying around
all night long,
squirrels in the attic;
or maybe
not crowded,
lives empty,
hearts empty,
minds empty,
and yet still,
no room,
the emptiness
like a
darkness
filling the emptiness,
room for nothing else,
emptiness a fullness;
and so,
“No Vacancy”,
no room
for
the Holy Child
of
Bethlehem.
And if this is us, O Lord, then help us, help us to
make room,
make room
for the Holy Child,
make room
for him
to enter in and
be part of our plans,
be part of all we do,
be the one we remember
more than anyone, and
grace our schedules with purpose,
grace our days with meaning,
grace our lives with hope;
make room
for him
to enter in and
calm our hearts,
deliver us from our angers,
release us from our resentments,
comfort us,
heal us;
make room
for him
to enter in and
order our thoughts,
ease the worries that plague us,
cast out our fears with love;
make room
for him
to enter into
the emptiness
with the fullness
of his light and
drive the darkness
away;
make room
enough
to welcome
him
who is
our salvation.
O Lord, in our culture in which the sign of the times is a sign, the sign,
“No Vacancy”,
in which there is much that is
unholy and ugly
and many have become
cold and cruel,
in which too many
are consumed with
themselves alone,
grace us with
the vision
of Christmas,
the vision
of what can
come to birth
as we welcome
the Holy Child,
the vision
of people
being their best,
being warm and kind and considerate;
the vision
of beauty and holiness
gracing life once again;
the vision
of peace
and gladness
as people come
together for the
good of all;
the vision
of hope
and joy
descending upon this earth.
And we pray, O Lord, that you would enter into the lives and
be present with all those
who especially need your
healing and comfort and strength,
those who are battling cancer and illness,
those who are suffering,
those who are dying,
those who are grieving,
and for those who have nowhere to call home,
those who hunger for bread and more than bread,
those for whom Christmas is tough,
given all that’s happened.
And move us
to be there for them
as well.
O Lord, as Christmas approaches, help us to prepare
our hearts and minds,
our very lives,
to welcome
the Holy Child
with faith
or longing
for faith,
and offer him
room enough
to come
to birth
within.
Amen.
