It Can't Come Soon Enough: A Prayer
O Lord, it can’t come soon enough,
or so people
have been saying,
that it can’t come soon enough,
the new year
can’t come soon enough,
because
this year
has been
the worst of years
for many people,
for many reasons,
and so
it can't come soon enough,
an end
to the virus
still stalking us,
the divisiveness
still dividing us,
the fear and anger and prejudice
still driving us,
the poisonous politics
still poisoning us,
the chaos
still convulsing us;
it can't come soon enough,
a new year,
a year that is new,
a year in which
we can go where we want,
worship together as we want,
hug whom we want,
without worry;
in which
there are jobs to be had,
there is food enough on the table,
there are businesses coming back;
in which
people
actually talk with one another,
listen to one another,
find common ground,
and unite
for the sake of
the common good,
justice,
hope;
in which
kindness,
compassion,
consideration of others
return;
in which
character,
virtue,
truth,
matter again;
in which
there is
a cooling off,
a calming down,
peace.
O Lord, it can't come soon enough,
and yet
deep down
we know
that the clock striking midnight
won't change a thing
unless people change
(we change?),
unless people
stop spreading the virus with their thoughtlessness and
start doing what is right and responsible
and help normalcy return;
unless people
stop attacking one another and
start coming together;
unless people
stop allowing fear, anger, prejudice to consume them and
start allowing kindness and compassion
to fill them;
unless people
stop swallowing the poison politicians peddle and
start demanding truth, accountability,
decency;
unless people
stop working up themselves and others and
start calming down
and work up some solutions.
O Lord, maybe what can’t come soon enough
is a year
in which
Christians are
Christian
and live with
faith enough,
strength enough,
courage enough,
to be the new people
they are called to be
and be models of how to
respond differently,
react differently,
relate differently,
and live
with the love
that makes all things
new.
Help us
to be
such people!
O Lord, we are so thankful for the vaccines that mean
the end is in sight,
but still
there are dangerous
and deadly days
yet to come.
And so
give us the resolve not to let our guard down,
even though we’ve pretty much had it,
and let us continue to pray for
those who are battling the virus,
those wearing themselves out caring for them,
those overcome with grief for those lost,
those who desperately need work, relief, assistance,
to keep
food on the table
and a roof over their heads,
those who are isolated and depressed.
Heal, refresh, comfort, uphold, lift them.
And move us
to do what we can
and move leaders
to do what they should
to ease the pain so many feel.
O Lord, it can't come soon enough,
and tomorrow night
we will welcome in
that new year
we so long for
(unless, of course, we are fast asleep by 9:30 or so);
but awake or asleep
it will come.
May
hope,
joy,
peace,
come with it
and make it
the best of years.
Amen.
