We Are Each of Us Like a City: A Prayer
O Lord, I was thinking about All Saints Sunday,
reading all those names,
family and friends and members
who have died,
and I got to thinking that
we are each of us
like a city,
because
living within us
are those who have gone before us,
mothers and fathers and grandparents too,
husbands and wives and children,
friends and teachers,
members and mentors,
and others still;
living within us
are those who
loved and
taught and
guided and
encouraged and
helped us find the way; and
without whom
we might not be who we are,
we might not have become what we have become,
we might not have made it this far;
without whom
we might not have known
the life we have known;
without whom
we might not have known
the happiness we have known;
living within us
are kind of our own
personal saints,
not pure,
not perfect,
not pious,
but
human and kind and forgiving, who perhaps
lived with faith,
showed us the way to faith,
something of models and examples,
giving and generous and gracious,
who perhaps
come to mind
when we think about
what a Christian should be,
what a human being should be,
what we should be.
It is the truth,
the truth of our lives,
the truth
that we have
made it to this day
because of others
along the way.
But truer than this truth, O Lord, is a deeper truth,
the truth
that we have
made it to this day
because of
you,
because
through those who
live within us
you
loved us,
spoke to us,
graced us,
consoled us,
forgave us,
confronted us,
challenged us,
called us,
blessed us
in so many ways, and
through them
brought us
to this day.
And so help us, O Lord, help us to give thanks,
give thanks
to you
for those
we have loved and lost, yet
live within us still,
speak to us still,
guide us still;
give thanks
for all that was
found in them
and is
found even now
in the memory of them;
give thanks
for
love undying,
laughter undying,
life undying;
give thanks
that death
does not
have the last word;
give thanks
for all that
easters up
day after day,
hope undying,
joy undying.
And we pray, O Lord, that we would be something of
saints ourselves,
people of compassion and kindness,
people who forget themselves for the sake of others,
people through whom
your healing, comforting, consoling, sustaining, strengthening
love
comes through to those
who are ill or battling disease,
who are suffering and hurting,
who are dying,
who are grieving,
who are struggling to get by,
and all
who are hungry, homeless, or lost in despair.
Through us,
apart from us,
raise them up in
hope!
O Lord, we each of us are
like a city,
so many
living withing us,
a part of us still
and we a part of them.
Let
the truth
of that
bring us gladness
day after day
as they continue
to help us
along the way.
Amen.
