Too Wrung Out to Ring In: A Prayer
O Lord, even without an 800 pound peach plummeting,
lots of people
found ways
to ring in
the new year;
partygoers partying,
merrymakers making merry,
dancers dancing,
hugs and kisses and toasts,
hoopla and hope,
needing something, anything, to celebrate,
just glad
that last year,
a new year not new,
over,
hoping for
a new New Year;
and so
ringing it in,
fireworks firing,
rockets rocketing,
flares flaring.
And yet,
there were also those
too wrung out
to ring in
a new year;
wrung out
emotionally,
mentally,
physically
spiritually,
religiously;
the coronavirus and just the news of the day,
fear and worry and anxiety,
illness and death and grief
all taking
their toll,
leaving many
exhausted,
enervated,
empty,
making for
a tough year, a tough Christmas, a tough New Year;
faith run down,
hope run out,
joy run over,
flattened,
too wrung out
to ring in
a new year.
O Lord, frankly, I'm not sure what to pray,
so mixed up
it all seems to be.
Maybe I should pray that
if we are among the ringers-in,
we would give you thanks
every morning and evening,
thanks for bringing us this far with
faith intact,
hope intact,
health intact,
love and joy too;
and pray that
we never forget
what Covid continues to
teach us:
how vulnerable we are,
how fragile life can be,
how precious each day is;
and not forget that
it's the simple things
that matter most,
family and friends,
love and generosity,
fun and joy;
and pray that
we remember those
too wrung out
to ring in
a new year,
remember
how long it takes to heal;
how hard it is to love again, trust again, hope again;
how hard it is to feel happy without feeling guilty;
how they need a friend,
how they need us.
And, Lord, maybe I should pray that if we are among
the wrung out,
still,
we would give you thanks
every morning and evening,
thanks
for your
grace and mercy
that has brought us to this day
when there were days we thought we'd
never make it to this day;
and pray that
we never forget what
all we've been through
should have taught us:
how we need to cherish each and every day,
because
you just never know;
and not forget
what matters most;
and pray that
we remember
the ringers-in,
be happy for them,
not grow sour or bitter,
allow their joy,
to lead us
out of ourselves
to faith again,
to love again,
to hope again.
O Lord, whether we are among the ringers-in or
the wrung out,
let us never
get so lost in ourselves
that the hungry or homeless or refugees of this world
become invisible to us.
Give us
eyes that see them,
hearts that respond to them,
feet that carry us to them.
And we pray that you would heal and comfort and strengthen
those who are ill or battling cancer,
those who are suffering and hurting,
those who are dying,
those who are grieving,
those hanging on by a thread.
Lift them in
hope!
O Lord, whether we saw the new year in at midnight
or were sound asleep by 9:00 PM,
let us go into the year
certain of your presence
so that we can manage
whatever comes
with faith
and strength
and confidence.
Amen.
