There’s No Better Way: A Prayer
O Lord, there’s no better way, no better way to
face these days,
survive these days,
manage these days,
than to
rejoice always,
pray without ceasing,
give thanks in all circumstances;
it is
your will
for us,
Paul says,
and no wonder
because
there is no better way to have
faith strong enough,
hope solid enough,
love great enough,
to see us through these days;
truly,
it is
the only way.
But, Lord, it is so hard to do, at least for me,
so easy it is to
get caught up in it all,
get taken down by it all,
get overwhelmed with it all;
never-ending virus,
never-ending political chaos,
never-ending heart-rending news,
another friend ill,
another friend dead,
another friend grieving;
little to rejoice about,
prayers not doing much good,
giving thanks not on the radar.
And yet still, we
must,
must rejoice,
must pray,
must give thanks,
must
whether we feel like it or not,
whether we think it does any good or not,
whether we see any reason to or not,
because
it is your will
and there is
no other way.
And so help me, O Lord, help us all
to rejoice,
in the day,
in life itself,
in you;
in a baby born,
a little child laughing,
a sky so bright and blue
it dazzles the eyes;
old photos
calling up moments of joy,
long ago joy joy again,
feeling the very same joy;
the sight of two old crocks holding hands,
the sight of young love too,
the sight of smiles like no other smiles;
the face of a friend,
a voice so good to hear,
a scent unmistakable;
your grace and mercy,
your forgiveness,
your love;
rejoice with a joy
not all the cruelty and meanness and
sheer stupidity all around
can take from us.
And help us all
to pray
without ceasing,
to pray for
healing,
not only our own healing or the healing of others, but
the healing of our land,
the wounds politics has inflicted,
the sickness sick politicians have spread,
the disease of untruth diseasing;
to pray for
an end to
the pandemic that is Covid,
the pandemic of anger and violence,
the pandemic of fear and prejudice;
to pray for
deliverance from ourselves,
reconciliation with you and with others,
hope.
And help us all
to give thanks
in all circumstances,
to be thankful
even when we think we have nothing to be thankful for,
to be thankful
just for waking up,
just for the smell of coffee in the morning,
just for the day itself
because
the funny thing is
when gratitude
becomes our attitude,
we suddenly see how much there is
to give thanks for,
even in the worst of circumstances,
and sourness and bitterness and resentment
can’t take hold;
to give thanks for
you,
your presence with us
whether we feel it or not,
your love for us
whether we trust it or not,
your faithfulness to us
whether we believe it or not.
And we pray, O Lord, for all who are struggling with illness,
who are suffering and hurting, who are dying,
who are grieving, who need a meal,
who are searching for a home,
who are at the end of their rope.
Be with them, comfort them, console them, strengthen them,
and lift them in hope;
and move us
to be there for them
in whatever way we can.
O Lord, it is your will for us,
because
there is no better way
to make it through these days,
and so
help us
to do your will and
rejoice always,
pray without ceasing,
give thanks in all circumstances.
Amen.
