I Couldn’t Help But Think: A Prayer
O Lord, I couldn't help but think that
all the prayers that might be prayed
have already been prayed,
and so
do we really need
yet another prayer
that prays what's
been prayed
year after year;
yet more words
that say
what has already
been said
again and again;
yet another voice
voicing
what has already
been voiced
by so many
for so long?
That's what I couldn't help
but think
because
all the
prayers and
words and
voices
haven't done much good;
yes, everything changed,
yet, nothing changed;
yes, laws challenged,
laws changed,
laws created,
yet
so much
unchallenged,
unchanged,
uncreated;
yes,
justice being done,
equality being established,
opportunity being given,
yet
still,
so very far
to go.
That's
what I couldn't help
but think
as the MLK holiday approached.
And, Lord, I also couldn't help but think that
no matter what I think
people will think that I should
pray
something about
the dream he once dreamt.
But what?
Maybe that we each of us
go into a room alone and
talk softly with ourselves
about some things
because
we all of us,
every last one of us, are
the problem,
and
we all of us,
every last one of us, are
the solution,
the problem
our hearts and minds and souls,
the solution
our hearts and minds and souls.
And so, that is my prayer, O Lord, that we
talk softly with ourselves about what we
honestly feel,
honestly think,
honestly believe,
what we feel and think and believe beneath
what we say we feel and think and believe, beneath
our polite, proper, public words,
what we may not want to admit we
still feel and think and believe;
talk softly with you about
the fear that still holds our hearts captive,
the prejudice that still warps our minds,
the hatred that still poisons our souls;
talk softly about
what needs to be
confessed,
forgiven,
overcome; and
talk softly with ourselves about
character, if
character matters anymore, if
character is a word children even know,
if we are people of
truth, integrity, virtue,
moral courage, belief;
talk softly with you about
being judged
on the content of our character,
by you, by others,
what the judgment would be;
talk softly about
the will needed
to develop character; and
talk softly with ourselves about
what rules our emotions,
what forms our thoughts,
what shapes our beliefs, if
politics
more powerful than
the Gospel;
talk softly with you about
being swayed by the crowd,
being taken in,
being weak;
talk softly about
standing strong
in you.
And I pray too, O Lord, that we talk with ourselves about
remembering,
being there for,
helping,
those who are battling the coronavirus or cancer or other illness;
those who are suffering and hurting;
those who are dying;
those who are grieving;
those who are struggling emotionally;
the hungry, the homeless, the refugees
of this world.
Heal, comfort, sustain, nourish, strengthen them all!
O Lord, I couldn't help but think that if ever
the dream once dreamt
is to become a reality,
it will be because
we all of us
talk softly with ourselves about
our heart and mind and soul,
loving you
with all
our heart and mind and soul,
and loving the neighbor as ourselves,
because
that is the
only thing
that can change
anything,
change
everything.
Amen.
